Driving Trip: White Elephant

I returned from my driving trip to Oakland White Elephant Sale.  It was terrific, so nicely organized.  I recommend it to anyone in the area to attend.  They are known to quilters as place to see a variety of used sewing machines.  They are all checked over before being put out for sale.  I had thought I would get a different machine since I have had such a hard time finding a service to do annual maintenance of my machine here.  The places I have called want close to $200!  I got distracted at the White Elephant event, and didn't buy a new machine.  But I did find and get two Blue Nordic plates, and 6 luncheon sized green glass plates that will match what I already have.  I also got several quilting books - and found a copy of Liberated Quilting so C was able to have her own!

I think I left around 9am on Wednesday.

I stopped at Knott's Berry Farm for lunch, and bought some boysenberry preserves to give as gifts for people I was going to meet on the trip.

I drove the 101.  I witnessed and smelled smoke from the fire near Oxnard.  It was like a wall of white just appeared!  I didn't know there was a fire there, but after I first saw the smoke there was a temporary sign saying highway five because of the fire.  Things cleared up after a little bit and I continued on my way. It got dark and I stayed in Buellton. Pea Soup Anderson's was closed for renovation (convenience store lady told me), so I just had a candy bar for dinner.

The next morning I went to Solvang for a walk around and a nice breakfast of aebleskiver and Danish sausage.  I don't remember having the sausage before, but it was the star.  Came with a lovely mustard sauce - somehow made with cream, egg and honey.  I would have needed a refrigerator to buy any for home.  It was nice to walk up and down the streets.  I remembered visits with my parents and with our son.  One time my Dad and son were there and son was so excited to discover a "new" TV show.  He had trouble waiting for my Dad to come out of the shower to tell him about the show.  It was the I Love Lucy Show.  We had a good time together.  I think that was the trip where the three of us drove up to Oregon.

Anyway, this time after Solvang I pulled over the road a few times to see the ocean, and went to a winery in Palos Robles before meeting up with friends who attend high school with my son in San Jose.  They used to come over for Friendsgiving and she and I would cook together.  Lots of fun.  They are are going to have a son next week (Feb 14).  She has high blood pressure so the doctor set a day to induce labor. It was lovely to see them - such a treat to get to see her so pregnant!  They treated me to dinner at a lovely Italian Restaurant - The Eatery? it was in a huge mall.  Delicious food and so nice to chat with them.

After San Jose it was a quick trip to Berkeley.  I first went to OakTown Spices to get a few, then arrived as C's for another delicious dinner at her place.  She made beautiful vegetables, salmon, and dessert for 8 other people.  I stayed at her house then until leaving Berkeley.  I met C online - she was new chair for a quilting guild and needing people to sign up for a class - so lucky to meet her.

We went to one of her singing practices, out to dinner, to the Oakland Art Museum, and she met me at the White Elephant event in the afternoon.

I got to meet other people from the guild for breakfast and one of them went to the White Elephant too.

We also had time to be together while she was prepping for a quilting class - I pressed pieces after she put them together.

When I left there I made my way to Sacramento and took the husband of a friend who recently passed away out to lunch.  He picked In and Out Burger - always a treat.  They lived in a 50 and older community for seven years.  It was really interesting to see all the services provided.  You can have grandchildren or other younger visitors for up to two months without raising an eyebrow.  I hadn't seen either of them for almost 30-years.  So unexpected that she passed away.  When I gave him the Knott's preserves, he had such a strange look on his face.  It turned out he had proposed to her while at Knott's.  I didn't remember hearing that story, but it was so nice that he shared it with me now.  There house is so nice. Two bedrooms, an office, three bathrooms, nice kitchen and great room.  So nice to have everything on one floor.

I drove on to Rocklin to stay with a friend from the Parent Association  We went out for really, really nice dinners.  She woke early for work so I had coffee with her, then we met for lunch or/and dinner.

The first day while she worked I went to visit another student my son went to high school with.  Once or twice a year we have been writing to each other, it was nice to get to see them finally again!

Note: The driving map changed to this after I stopped at a grocery store for a little break in Malibu.
Before that it had me routed to Santa Monica with no mention of the fire.
I don't know California geography very well.

Unfortunately, I then go sick with a cold - and ended up passing it on to her so she actually missed a day of work. I appreciate that she insisted I stay on until I felt better so I did.  Too bad we both weren't up to doing something on the weekend. (I had taken a Covid test and it was negative.)

The day I left it was raining and there were signs on the freeway to stay home to avoid the bad weather.  I was lucky and didn't hit too much rain. I tried to see Morro Rock, but it was foggy. Stayed I think in Santa Barbara.

In the morning I went to Carpenteria for anice breakfast - chicken and biscuits and eggs. Saw a sign for PCH and decided to go on that for long as I could.  Beautiful ocean views.  Went to Malibu and realized I was very near the fire area, so drove Malibu Canyon to the 101/5.

Drove thru LA and could see lots of helicopters and police cars as there was a protest against ICE round ups.  It was lovely to see all the flags from the people on the overpasses.

On return I wasn't really tired, but it was nice to be relaxed and home again. Got back on Monday, the cold lengthened the trip by about five days!

The next day my face felt like I was sun burned.  Then the next day my eyes felt like I was crying, and the whites turned red. The next day even after lots of Refresh eye drops they were even more red so I called eye doctor and snagged some time with her.  She thought from what I told her I was having a reaction to all the chemicals they used to stop the fires.  So I have OTC and Rx eye drops now for ten days.

I managed to sleep one day, then did go thru two boxes. So only 400 more to do.  Ha Ha.

I listened to several Audible books while on my drive.  They made the time pass very quickly!

  • West with Giraffes - Rudledge.  Based on a true story that ends up at the San Diego Zoo.  Amazing to listen to!
  • The Life Impossible - Matt Haig,  The narrators voice was pretentious - I didn't enjoy listening to her at all.
  • The Thursday Murder Club - Didn't like it that much.  Too many characters to keep track of. Trying too hard to make the old people so smart and capable.
  • Organizing from the Inside Out  (Spoiler: The trick is to just do it)
  • The Testaments - Atwood.  Very good - scary but good.
  • The Housemaid - McFadden  I think this is a series.  It surprised me, but isn't my cup of tea.  Too much violence spelled out and meaness against others enjoyed.

The 101 is a very enjoyable drive, as much as I earlier enjoyed driving up on the 15, this is a better way to drive.

Places to Go, Things to Read

I am hoping to take a driving trip from coast to coast this summer.

Did this once before in a car*. It was so much fun. On one way it was my husband and me, on the way back a friend from Sweden, Christina, flew over so we could do the drive together. (*Also did a cross country trip in a motorhome with husband, son, and cat!)

I spent a week with her in NYC years before.  She had done this before and was prepared with a list of art museums and we spent a day in most of them. I thought it would end up being repetitive, but any that did cross over added to my understanding and appreciation. We weren't tied at the hip. Generally we would set up place and time to meet for lunch and at the end. Great fun. It was wonderful.

We took the train from Boston, and made got tickets to see The Heiress? with Dan Stevens (of Downton Abbey) while on the train...  I remember after we saw the play I commented on how could he do the play and be in Downton Abbey - and she said with the timing of when the show was on TV in USA vs Sweden that I didn't know something and should just wait to find out! : )

As soon as we got to NYC we got passes for the train/bus that would last the week so we didn't have to stop to buy things every trip.  Great idea.

We stayed at the Edison Hotel - near to Times Square and lots of restaurants.  A lot of Swedish people stayed there according to my friend.  It has since been renovated and I think the prices are even higher. The room with her overlooked the Barrymore!  Later that summer, when I returned with my husband, we could see the flashing lights from Times Square reflected on the glass of the building across the way.

We started most mornings having breakfast at a place near Fox News and by St Patrick's Cathedral. Can't find it now in Yelp.  (EverGreen Cafe?) One day when we were there we could see lots of activity and concern at the side of Cathedral - turned out the Pope had announced his resignation.

Instead of taking the subway, my friend and I mainly took the bus so we got a feel for the locations of the museums and places we visited.

Frick Collection  https://www.frick.org/

The Whitney Museum of American Art https://whitney.org/

New York Public Library  https://www.nypl.org/

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)  https://www.moma.org/

The Brooklyn Museum  https://www.brooklynmuseum.org/

The Metropolitan Museum of Art  https://www.metmuseum.org/

We went to plays and the movies every night. Except one snowy night I took the train to visit a school friend of my son's while my friend went to see original The Book of Morman.

We went to the High Line and the City Quilter. Walked thru Central Park and thru the NYU. Found a kitchen supply shop that was lots of fun to see, had lunch at what we thought would be a little cafe, but turned out to be a popular place.  (It may have been the Coffee Shop Bar, 29 Union Square West, NY, NY, 10003 - Yelp says it's closed now. I just found the business card!) Walked by Hotel Chelsea - my honeymoon hotel!

Somewhere I hope I can find the list of where we went on that trip!

And a list of places visited on the driving trip to and from the east coast!

------

Anyway, for 2022, I asked the group attending Joe Cunningham's Friday group for suggestions on quilt or art places to stop and this is what they contributed:
  • Shelburne Museum (VT)
  • International Quilt Museum (Lincoln NE)
  • de Young Museum (San Francisco CA)
  • Joe also has quilts in Newark NJ and Michigan State University
  • I asked at in a comment on FromMyCarolinaHome.com and Carole suggested Quilt Museum (Paducah, KY)
  • Also remembered hearing Missouri Star Shops were fun to see too in Hamilton, Missouri.
Any other ideas are welcome!

--------

This trip I have Audible so thought my husband and I could listen to some books while driving...

Joe Cunningham's Friday group suggested:
Series by: Terry Pratchett, John McPhee, David Rosenfelt, Andrea Camilleri, Alan Bradley, J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter)
Books: A Gentleman in Moscow, 9th St Woman, Remembrance of Things Past

I had intended on quickly downloading books before my subscription renewed, but I misremembered how Audible worked. So for a few hours thought I had lost the ability to use the 8 credits I had remaining with my first subscription. On what I thought was the last day the subscription had flipped to 12 credits for the new year. But a simple email and phone call later I have 20 credits in my account so I did not lose any credits. What I have now will expire at the end of the subscription again (so I'm glad I had earlier changed the account from 24 to 12 books a year as I do not seem to be able to listen to more paid books than that). Thumbs up to Audible!

-------
My husband always brings his computer on trips and keeps a log of hotels stayed at in his calendar. He is so organized!  But I just write notes on scraps of paper and sometimes in my phone.

My quilting friend, Claire, has a notebook where she writes down the dates and names of guests and what food is served!  A terrific idea.

During the covid shut in I started to keep a meal and food log, but when I came to the end of the notebook I lost days and haven't been consistent after the first book.  Lots of information lost.  I do have bills for food that someday I want to buy exactly the same items to see the price changes....  It is difficult to know how much detail to include, as I don't know my audience for the logs...

If I were to live my life over though, I would get a notebook to record information for trips so I could have fun remembering things and could recommend things to others...

Well, back to going thru books filled with papers that I didn't organize before now!

Memories: Waldorf Kindergarten

When we were looking for schools for our son, the local school gave us a very bad impression.  Remember this was before all the school tragedies - but the school had signs saying that parents were not allowed on campus, not just that they were to sign in thru the office, but they were not permitted on campus!  That and that there were no grouping for writing or math put me off of the school.  Another school only used workbooks for the kids to learn - it was a very non-creative environment.  Another one had a super high percentage of handicapped and disabled children who needed diapering and feeding care. None of the schools had groupings for writing and math, only reading...

So when we were thinking about what school to have our son attend we started hearing about Waldorf.  There were three times we learned about it, let's see if I can remember any of them.  The last was a notice at a garage sale telling about the Waldorf Open House. I will think to see if I can remember the other ways.

Anyway, Waldorf seemed perfect as it was so arts and craftsy - the opposite of what my husband and I could offer our son.  He started in a kindergarten program.  Before school started I missed hearing that the kids were supposed to wear different colors on different days of the week.  We had red, yellow, and green shirts, but needed orange and purple. So that first day after leaving our son off I went to the store to get some white t-shirts and fabric paint - so we could decorate a shirt together.  But I got rear ended that afternoon, so was late with picked our son up.  One mother stayed on the playground with my son and her son and they played together.  I will always remember how wonderfully kind that was for her to do.

The four of us spent many hours together after school during that year.  Her husband was living in their native country, so she had lots of time to share with us.  We would take the boys to so many places - it was always fun!  My husband was working all the time so he didn't miss us at all...  I cried when she and her son moved back to be with the husband.  They wanted their son to live in their country and learn that language.  I caught her at a time when she needed company too, as we had met her just after her husband had left to work in the family business.

We have seen each other a handful of times since then.  Here, in Boston and Buffalo, and in their country two times!  I always feel like we just start up where were left off even though we have not done a good job of keeping in touch in between visits.

Her son is now a dentist working at the university where he did his training.

The last time I saw her was in 2015 at the beginning of my wonderful drive across the country with my Swedish friend. The first friend's son was starting dental school in Buffalo so we drove from Boston to her and stayed a few days.  We went to Niagara Falls, did a self-guided architectural walking tour of  Buffalo, the Teddy Roosevelt Inauguration House Museum, had Buffalo Wings, and ice cream and sponge candy at an old fashioned classic ice cream parlor (Fowler's?), (pretty sure we went to the Modern Art Museum).  Chatted, shared thoughts and feelings.  It was a great beginning of the driving trip.

----

At Waldorf the kindergarteners and teachers make lunch together every day.  I found the recipe booklet while going thru a box so will write them down here so they are handy!  While typing I searched the web to be sure of the bread recipe and discovered that different schools have different recipes for their schools.  Makes sense, but I thought all these years the schools all did the same thing...

Monday - Violet Day - Rice Cereal

(For 25-30 children)

3 c sweet brown rice - cover with 1.5 inch water

Cook until tender (watch pot and stir often) The school had a heat disperser the grains didn't burn.

Sprinkle with gomasio (sesame salt) or sweeten with honey.

Tuesday - Red Day - Bread

1.  Sponge: Combine and set aside, 1/4 c water, 2 T yeast and 1/4 t maple syrup

2. Combine 1/4 c oil, 1/2 c maple syrup, 1/5 t salt and 2 c water

Add 1 & 2 together, add 1.5 c flour, stir 200 times and then let rest 5 - 10 min.  Add 4 c whole wheat flour (okay to sub 1/2 c oats for 1/2 c flour) Knead, add flour as needed.  Shape and place on oiled pan.  Bake in 325 degree oven for 20 min for rolls, 45 min for a loaf.

I'm not sure now if the kids only had bread on this day.  I'm remembering they all had baskets for their lunch and how I had to look for metal bowls and cups for him to use.  I made cloth napkins and a cover for the basket.  I still have the napkins and one of the baskets - now holding hand towels.  My favorite napkin was made with red and white checkers, but it had ants printed on it so they were crawling around.  Anyway, maybe these recipes are for a mid-morning or afternoon treat, not a full lunch.

Wednesday - Yellow Day - Apple-Millet Cereal

Serves 25-30 children

2.25 c millet

6 - 8 c water (or apple juice)

5 - 7 apples, cut up

2 t cinnamon

Cover with water, add more as needed.  Cook until tender - around 20 minutes.

Perhaps serve with maple syrup.

Thursday - Orange Day - Barley Soup

For 25-30 children

1 onion

3 carrots, chopped

3 c barley

1/2 c tamari

1 T parsley

1 T oregano

2 quarts water

Chop onion, saute in oil until soft.

Add remaining ingredients.

Cook until barley is tender.

This was our son's favorite.  A few times that year they asked me to have him bring in a few carrots or apples to use.

Friday - Green Day - Rye Cereal

6 c rye flakes

1.5 t salt

12 c water

Cook until tender.

Serve with maple syrup and bananas or honey.

Note: 3 cups rye and 6 cups water for 11 to 12 children.

Birthday Cake

For our son's birthday the teacher made a cake and decorated it with beautiful orange nasturtium flowers they picked from their hillside.  I'd never had them before, they added a fresh and peppery taste to the cake. They must have had this cake many times during the year, but it felt special for us and our son to have it to celebrate his birthday.

Applesauce "Birthday" Cake

3.25 c whole wheat pastry flour

1.5 t baking soda

1.5 t cinnamon

3/4 c butter

1 c maple syrup

1/2 c molasses or honey

1 egg

1.5 c applesauce

Combine dry ingredients.  Cut in the butter.  add rest of ingredients, Beat well.  Bake at 350 degrees for around 1 hour.

--------

Compared to our lives, there was a lot of religion in Waldorf, but we felt it wasn't a religious school. I'm looking over this verse and recipe booklet.  Ah well. It's good to be good to each other and ourselves. Here are a few poems/verses the kids recited. I don't remember them all, but do remember I thought it was sweet the way they added to the order of the day, the rituals, the community, and the memories.

Verse of Anticipation

When I have said my evening prayer,

and my clothes are folded on the chair,

when Mother switches out the light,

I'll still be ___ years old tonight!

But at the break of day,

before the children rise and play,

before the darkness turns to gold,

Then I'll be ___ years old.

Birthday Verse

In heaven shines a golden star

An Angel lead me from afar

From heaven on high unto the earth

And brought me to my house of birth.

Birthday Song

We wish you a happy birthday

a joyous and celebrated birthday

To our friend _____

May you have a long, long life

Candle Lighting

I can light a candle

God can light a star

Both of them are helpful

Shining where they are

Candle Snuffing

Candlelight shining bright

Thank you for your loving light

Good night

Good-bye Verse

Our work, our play, our song

In us becomes a light

We carry it along

Until the stars shine thru the night

To God we bring it all

Answering his call.

Good-bye Song

Good-bye now, Good-bye now.

We leave you now

And home we go.

Good-bye now, Good-bye now.

Good-bye to all of you.

It's time to go or we'll be late.

Let Martin lead us to the gate

Good-bye now, Good-bye now.

Good-bye to all of you.

Come Out and Play

Bright is the day

The birds are all singing

The flowers are gay.

Stretching up, oh, so high

Trying to reach the sky

Come Out and Play!

Bright is the day

The birds are all singing

The flowers are gay.

Morning Verse

To Earth I come to greet the light, to greet the Sun

The stones that rest

The plants that grow

The beasts that run

To greet all people who walk and work and will

Love God in all

Then God greets me, in all I do

And you and I and God are one.

Morning has come

Night is away

Rise with the sun

And welcome the day!

There is more to remember about those Waldorf days, but I will save that for later.  Going to get ingredients for barley soup now!

Round Up Week 23: Slow Start

In the Studio with Lauren: Class 3 Session 3:
Bias tube appliqué for Celtic designs and Indian Kolam

The class was presented well - I'm getting the hang of hand sewing.  Last week finished my first ever hand stitched binding to finish a quilt because of these classes.

The homework for the Bias tube applique actually had two examples to try out, but they were large I thought for me. Instead I used the technique to make another heart.  From a distance, the work looks rather nice - it's the detail look that shows the rough concave and convex points...

To make the bias tubing I cut a strip from a cereal box and inserted that to get the seam so it was in the center of the tube when pressed - easy peasy!  If I were going to make a larger, more beautiful piece I can see how purchasing the metal tubes would be very useful in making flat tubes.

The lesson this week was on couching - but she used the machine instead of showing hand methods. Actually my machine is not stitching well so I will find a tutorial online to help me do this by hand.

I searched for mechanical sewing machine repair in San Diego and now have a name to try out having the machines maintained.  The previous place more than doubled their prices and I had to return the machine to have the repair refined as it did not work the first time.  So I want a new place for this work.

Five Star Resources:

Megan at Tiny Orchard Quilts has many useful, creative and innovative projects.  Very professional presented.  There are so many tutorials, I had a difficult time picking out a few as examples:

How to Change the Size of a Quilt Block! Make A Block Any Size with These Tips!
How to Calculate Fabric Requirements for a Pattern! Take Your Sketch to a Quilt Pattern!
Gradient Quilt Tutorial: Choose Your 3 Favorite Colors to Make this Easy to Piece Quilt!
The Easy Way to Get PERFECT 1/4" Seam Allowances! Improve your Accuracy and Stop Losing Your Points

Megan will be starting a new summer QAL that will probably be wonderful to do.  I'm in a rush to finish up my bookkeeping so I can start the end of the month. First post about this now at:  https://tinyorchardquilts.com/blogs/news/summer-skies-medallionalong

Darlene Michaud - Videos on piecing, semi-quick recipes, and new series on decluttering to get ready for a cross country move. She is a one person production and posts something when she is inspired to do that.  For her lesson videos she plans ahead and at least usually thinks about the best way to present an idea. Sometimes she includes a lot of personal background information. She does not always post things that the quilt police would approve of.

I'm interested now to see her documenting getting rid of stuff in preparation for putting her family home on the market so she can move from Maine to Mississippi (to be near her son and away from the snow).

She used to have videos (Organized so you could see progress each month or quarter) where she shared how much money she was earning from doing all the videos, but I can't find the link to that now.  But when I first found her she was making a few hundred a month, then it grew to I think a few thousand the last time I looked.  It was interesting to see the behind the scenes of all that part of YouTube business.

Cindy Seitz-Krug.  A few years ago she set out to create and share a free motion quilting design based on starting with a grid.  I keep going back to her videos for inspiration.

I may use this design in my wavy line quilt... (but enlarge so I do once for every block in the quilt).

---------
I went thru my clothes, looking for a certain shirt, and in the process realized that some of the things I had put away had stains.  So plan to go thru again and pull things out - wash the ones that need it and then give them to Goodwill.

I also had a plan to go thru the books on my shelves in the bedroom - There are a few I have put aside, but I am hoping I can come up with some way to group things and then to be able to give away many more.  I decided that anything that had to do with teaching reading or writing I would just let go, so that will be easy.  But then there are cook books, learning language books, math books, novels I haven't read.  So already this is difficult to do.

All I can do is what I can do....

Oh, both of my sewing machines now need maintenance beyond what I can do.  I found a new guy, highly recommended on Yelp - but he will be on holiday until July.  So for the EBHQ classes the last weekend of this month I will just use the time to watch, and cut fabric in preparation for sewing later....

Round Up Week 13: Another Log Cabin Variation (Pineapple Blocks) and Log Cabin Sampler Quilt from Elizabeth DeCroos at Epida Studios

Time is passing so quickly.  It seems like it was just yesterday that I wrote the last update!

Sewing:

I made a second courthouse step block:

This time I really tried to be aware of the value instead of looking at the color - but the light blue in the center, compared to the other light strips in that direction is very dark. Ah well, back to the drawing board...

So at the beginning of last week I had these blocks in my log cabin exploration stack - from the free online eventbrite class "More Quilts - Log Cabins and Power Strips".

This week we were on to pineapple blocks. I made a few variations of this block for the Block Lotto in 2011 - Sophie always had a great way of describing the colors to use to make the blocks look so lovely together.  I wish she were continuing with her block ideas.

By making the logs so they are one inch after three rounds the block for my online class was supposed to be 10.5 inches. (Center block is 2.5 inches.) My block was 10 inches.

I added another round, and not trimming the outer addition, now it is 12 inches square.  According to the tutorial I found (Bella SKILLBuilder) I should add one more one inch log to finish at 10.5.

Again, I started with a light blue that is much darker than the rest of the fabrics in that location...  I have one more block to make.  Hopefully the block will look okay in the group of blocks I have already made.

I found an online tutorial for making a 10.5 inch pineapple block with the same 2.5 inch center and 1 inch logs at:  https://youtu.be/jhDurpvOn9o
The entire quilt along info here:  https://blog.fatquartershop.com/bella-skill-builder/
This method makes use of the speciality ruler for making pineapple blocks.  Pretty neat, but I don't think I'll be making many pineapples...  The directions are very nice as they include what the measurements should be after a round is added.  Also, the cutting instructions make it easy to figure out what to do!
Here sort of is the cutting information:
Center 2.5 inch
First round make with 4-2 x 4.5 and trim to 3.25
Second round make with 4-2 x 4.5 and trim to 4.5
Third round make with 2-2 x 4.5 and 2-2 x 6.5 and trim to 5.25
Fourth round make with 4-2 x 6.5 and trim to 6.5
Fifth round make with 4-2 x 6.5 and trim to 7.5
Sixth round make with 4- 2 x 4.5 and trim to 8.5
Seventh round make with 4-2 x 6.5 and trim to 9.25
Eighth round make with 4- 2 x 4.5 and trim to 10.5
Oops I forgot for each round also have to add the corners or maybe the information I typed includes the corners.  I'm not sure.
So also at the end add 4-2 x 4.5 to the corners and trim to 10.5
Need to watch the video again to count things up correctly.

This site does a good job of explaining the dark and light corners using paper piecing patterns - https://www.generations-quilt-patterns.com/pineapple-quilt-patterns.html

This pineapple has the same color for the center and the outer corners and stresses the need for contrasting values:
She also shows a different way for the first round than I have seen before.

Added 4-13-2021: I'm thinking perhaps of making a pineapple instead of the wreath block for the block exchange I mistakenly signed up for.  I need to make 20 blocks that measure at least 9 1/2 inches - unfinished.  They must include some of the focus fabric.  (I have a half yard of the focus fabric.)  I thought the math for the Bella SKILLBuilder would save me, but it ends with a round at 9.25.  Perhaps if I started with a larger center block I would be okay?  Doing this block I could just use the fabric I have for different greens and whites and just have the red for the center and corner...  Perhaps I will know for the next Round Up post here....  : )

New-to-me Blog to Follow:

I did find a beautiful Log Cabin Sampler Quilt (doesn't look like a sampler!) from Elizabeth DeCroos at Epida Studio:

This sampler quilt has these Log Cabin block variations (click to go to her site):
  1. Getting Ready for the Log Cabin Sampler.  The blocks are 9″ square,  49 blocks total square.  Quilt will be 63" square.
  2. Corner Block  Make 11 blocks (five with a light square and six with a dark square)
  3. Bento Block Make 3 blocks
  4. Court House Steps Make 3 blocks
  5. Traditional Log Cabin Make 9 blocks
  6. Greek Keys Make 3 blocks
  7. Off Set Cabin Make 7 blocks
  8. Star Cabin Make 6 blocks
  9. Cornerstone Log Cabin Make 7 blocks
  10. Finishing it up
  11. Sampler Quilting Options
The directions for each block and information for the quilt are all generously available for free on the Epida Studios website.

Elizabeth DeCroos's directions are very clear - so nicely arranged, I really like the way this quilt shows off the different styles of log cabin in a non-symmetrical way.  She also made the quilt with red and white and red, white and green.

So that's it for the sewing part of this entry.

=======

As I mentioned at the start, this week went by very quickly.  I did my three times a week phone chat walk with my friend, and I did five hours of exercise with my personal trainer.  Beyond that I think it was spent taking care of our little dog, planning and preparing meals.  Some reading.  I found a book I had purchased years ago - a novel about life in Taiwan "An Orphan of Asia".

Hopefully, next week I will have more to write about.

And have the energy required to write!

My son and I made cookies and brownies this week!

Ah, I'm reminded of an article, I think in the Washington Post, about behaviors that we should continue with even after everyone is vaccinated and the threat from Covid is over.  I can't find the article again now...  But one of the behaviors was Cooking WITH YOUR FAMILY.  That sounded wonderful.  I guess my family does cook with me, but not on a consistent basis...

Too tired to write more now.

4-13-21  I add the links to the sites with information on how to make the log cabin sampler quilt, another photo of the log cabin sampler, and more information about the Bella SKILLBuilder pineapple quilt.  And a note added about the Christmas block exchange....
