RSC16: February Brown with Pink Accents

This month the rainbow scrap challenge colors are brown with pink accents.

It was easy to find my scraps as they were hanging by color in the closet.

I'm not sure how long it took me to get these scraps so they were 12.5 inch square, but it's done now!

Monthly colors and ideas for blocks designed to end up in one end of year quilt.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

This past weekend, my husband and son made my birthday cake. It's a burnt almond cake.

They start with a cake mix, but make the pastry cream and frosting from scratch.

I think it was the prettiest one yet, and certainly was very tasty too.

We had some friends over for dinner.  It was very nice.

My husband and I have been married for 30 years, however, it's really just recently that have figured out a way to entertain together.

I'm taking advantage of this!

We set up table for the pre-dinner food.

Guests brought flowers and additional wine.
We put the food here and people served self -
buffet style.  DH grilled chicken and vegetables.
Table set with green and blue!
I made the salad that was on this table.

This year the cake had five layers.
But they weren't all alike...
DH and DS got to chatting and missed some of the directions.

So the first cake made that day was extremely flat.  It was
tasty though.  The first layer was nibbled on and gone.

It was like a wonderful sugar cookie.  This one became the
fifth layer in the official cake. (they forgot to add the
water, and to blend the batter for 4 minutes.)  The
other four layers were really two layers cut in half.

A wonderful tradition -

    1. Oh wait - the block has two names. It's very official now! I sorted by scraps by color a few years ago, it's nice the RSC16 has finally kicked in for me so I can use them! Thanks for the good wishes too. And Burnt Almond is my favorite. Used to be we could buy from a few bakeries, but they took off their list so that's why my DH and DS make it now. Every year they try to improve things and write all kinds of notes - it's a fun ritual. I think they look forward to making it together so that is a nice project.... : )

    1. Thank you! The cake is enhanced with the blue stand, a recent but previous gift from DH. It came with a large platter also make of the blue. I have visions of having a party and putting little sandwiches on that. I'm glad to have a reason to use those scraps, so thank you for organizing the RSC! One block a month is a good way for me to start! I appreciate your time on the project and your good thoughts. : )

    1. Thank you for your good wishes! There is a bakery in San Jose California that is famous their burnt almond cake. Last summer we were up there for a conference and a friend's birthday so got her one. Have to say my husband's interpretation is much better in my opinion! The pastry cream in between the layers is important! The original one was something my Godmother got for her installation as Worthy Matron (it was 1965-1970 time frame) for Eastern Star. It was a sheet cake and so lovely. I can remember them opening the pink cake box and seeing the cake with the toasted almond slices sort of standing up in the frosting. It was beautiful, unique and delicious! I don't know if our cake is exactly like that one, but close enough. I've always wanted to have people over, just now getting so we are doing it at a more regular basis! One of my long term goals is to get comfortable with entertaining. It's sort of happening. It was good this time to actually find the cloth napkins and have the table set ahead of time! Thanks for coming by!
